School and Class Summary:
I am a Youth Specialist who works for Crossroads Employment Services, a non-profit organization who offers employment services to youth (ages 14-21) and adults. I currently facilitate the Real Game at two local high schools in Sacramento, CA.
Rosemont High School: Is a traditional high school. I work with a group of eight high school seniors who have learning disabilities.
Kitty Hawk: Is an alternative education school that serves 22 students in grades 7-12. I work with a group of seven juniors and seniors.
TRGC 2.1 Implementation:
Rosemont High School: I teach the curriculum online within a small computer lab. Each student has his or her own computer. We meet once a week, during their fourth period, for about one hour.
Kitty Hawk: I teach the curriculum offline in a classroom. There are no computers available for the students, so I utilize a portable lab-top and a projector, when needed for a group activity, to illustrate the sessions and activities on a wall. We meet once a week, during their last period, for about an hour.
Provide the following details for each session listed below:
- Is this session used in class?
- If not, why not?
- What changes did you make to the session?
- How long did it take to do this session?
- Challenges you experienced when doing this session?
- Attach any hard copy additional material you included for this session.
- Success stories using this session in class.
- Recommendations (technology or pedagogy) for this session.
Unit 1:
Since I am conducting the Real Game both on and offline I prep my self with both materials. Both materials incorporate the same concepts, but they do it differently. Before each session I read both on and offline rubric and I choose the one that would fit best for the class.
Session 1 The Spin Game
Rosemont High School:
- The session was used in a class setting.
- Changes made to the session: projecting the game using a computer screen. The students had to come
around the computer to read and answer the questions.
- The session took 1 hour
- The challenges I confronted when conducting the session was having the students read/view the
questions from a computer screen.
- Success stories: The student enjoyed the game. It seemed as if they liked selecting a person to click
the spin button.
- Recommendations: Using the online version as appose to the off line (paper form).

- Recommendations: project the game on the wall. I had fun using a computer rather than on paper.
Session 2 The Dream
Rosemont High School:
- The session was used in a class setting.
- Changes made to the session: none
- The session took 1 hour.
- Challenges: I confronted technical difficulties when conducting the session. The students had a hard
time remembering their login and password, and the computers were running extremely slow. I do not
have access to my own computer, so I utilize one of the student's computer. This eliminates her
computer and her having to do the session while I explained the activity.
- Success stories: All the students had a great time clicking away and wishing on.
- Recommendations: Project the overview on a screen to keep the students focused. Close the session
with the Personal Reflection questions it helps the students reflect on their own lives and really put
things into perspective.
Kitty Hawk:
- The session was used in a class setting.
- Changes made to the session: none
- The session took 30 minutes (Sessions 2 & 3 were combined in one class period)
- Challenges: None. Since this session is off line there were no technical difficulties.
- Success stories: All the students enjoyed selecting their dream items and life style. Managing the time
frame allowed us to be successful in combining both sessions in one class period.
- Recommendations: Close the session with the Personal Reflection questions it helps the students
reflect on their own lives and really put things into perspective.
Session 3 What's My Line?
Rosemont High School:
- The session was used in a class setting.
- Changes made to the session: I had the students define the words: job, occupation, and career before
playing the game. This process helped the students understand how people do not use these terms
properly.
- The session took 1 hour.
- Challenges: The students had a hard time remembering their login and password, and the computers
were running extremely slow.
- Success stories: The activity helped the students distinguish the difference between a job and an
occupation.
- Recommendations: Explaining to the students, before they view their assigned occupation that all
occupations are important and needed.
Kitty Hawk:

- Challenges: Keeping the students from getting overly excited during the activity when answering
correctly. The Role Profile "A" Key for "A day in the Life..." does not have all of the occupations listed.
- Success stories: The activity helped the students distinguish the difference between a job and an
occupation.
- Recommendations: Explaining to the students, before they choose their assigned occupation that all
occupations are important and needed.
Session 4 Our Town
Session 5 Who Am I? Who Are You?

Unit 2:
Session 1 After Work
Rosemont High School:
- The session was used in a class setting.
- Changes made to the session: none
- The session took 1 hour.
- Challenges: Getting the students engaged. They are loosing interest in the curriculum.
- Success stories:
- Recommendations: I have noticed utilizing the offline version of the Real Game is easier to keep the students focused because they face me. Versus when I conduct the Real Game with a class that is online the students have their backs towards me. It becomes easier for the students to get off task and wonder off to different websites.
Kitty Hawk:
- The session was used in a class setting.
- Changes made to the session: none
- The session took 45 minutes
- Challenges: Getting the students to role play and filling out their sheets. Some students had a difficult
time trying to estimate a time frame for the activities, since they do not do most of the things listed
on the "where does all my time go" sheet.
- Success stories: The students understood the assignment and completed it in a timely manner. The
assignment helped the students think realistically and understand they really would not have that
much time to do too many leisure activities. In addition, one student was absent the week prior, he
missed both sessions 2 & 3, but he was able to not only complete both session, but also complete Unit
2 session 1. Having the student catch up was not as difficult as I imagined.
- Recommendations: Have the students complete their leisure activity sheet during the wish list session.
If they have not filled it out they will need to go back and complete it for this session. Time is being
spent on something that should have been filled out previously.
Session 2 Reality Check
Kitty Hawk:
- The session was used in a class setting.
- Changes made to the session: utilized a projector.
- The session took 1 hour.

- Success stories: All the students enjoyed the activity. Having the students fill out their monthly budget gave them a rude awakening of the importance of managing their money.
- Recommendations: I have noticed utilizing the offline version of the Real Game is easier to keep the students focused because they face me. Versus when I conduct the Real Game with a class that is online the students have their backs towards me. It becomes easier for the students to get off task and wonder off to different websites.
